The Furniture Guy's Book
Joe LErario, Ed Feldman
|
Juggling expert furniture repair, pop culture hilarity and swerves into
B-movie lore, its no wonder the Furniture Guys have attracted a TV audience
of millions. Using their trademark zany approach, the duo presents 10 projects
with step-by-step guidance on stripping, staining, upholstering, basic repairs,
scratch removal and more. A roll-top desk, Victorian throne chair and pine
hat-rack are among the items examined in detail; additional handy tips include
setting up a work area and scouting yard sale bargains. All this and a good
laugh ... just be sure to put down your circular saw before the bellyaches and
snorts begin.

Adirondack or lodge style evolved in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries as wealthy industrialists built rugged, luxurious "camps" in
unspoiled remote locations. The look, evoking a not-so-distant pioneer past, touched
a national chord and became hugely popular; similar hideaways (of all sizes) can
still be found in mountain and lake regions throughout the country. Now a new
generation has rediscovered the lodge look, seeking ways to incorporate its setter
style and philosophy into their own getaway homes. "Adirondack Style"
is a handsomely styled and photographed book, sure to broaden your knowledge and
appreciation of the era and its design.

Finding books about Frank Lloyd Wright is easy.
Finding the right one (sorry, we couldnt help it)
is a little more difficult. Much has been written
about his structures, but Wright was just as meticulous
about his interiors, designing windows, furniture,
and even accessories. "50 Favorite Rooms By Frank Lloyd
Wright", by Diane Maddex, is a spectacular survey of
Wrights interiors. Brief descriptions accompany full-page
color photos of these exquisite rooms, revealing details of
color, design and texture. The book spans the full range of
his architectural career, including both residential and
public spaces. In a world of expensive coffee table books,
this volume is a great value. No Wright fan should miss it.

In The Neoclassic Style: Empire, Biedermeier and the Contemporary Home
Melanie Fleischmann, with Mick Hales
|
We were crushed at the news that this book was out of print,
then thrilled to learn that the wonderful but expensive hardcover
is now available in paperback and every bit as beautiful.
Beginning with Empire and Biedermeier design, this historically
rich journey covers both originals and updates in furniture and
decorating accents. The text is excellent, as is the stunning
photography of Mick Hales. The grand finale is page after page of
brilliant design ideas blending classic with contemporary. Forget
about tucking this book away between your marble obelisk bookends;
you'll want to keep it handy for a long while.

Shabby Chic
Rachell Ashwell
These companion books set the tone for creating a romantic look with flea market
finds and lots of faded slipcovers. Both books use lush visuals to encourage creativity;
Shabby Chic is the first and more substantial of the two. Clever ideas peek out of every page as
Ashwell succeeds in illustrating her message: seek and find beauty in unexpected places, then make it your own.

Art Deco Interiors Decoration and Design Classics of the 1920s and 1930s
Patricia Bayer
|
Art Deco, the reigning design trend of the 1920s and 30s,
brought modern art and design into everyday life. Its explosive
impact and widespread acceptance changed interior design forever.
Todays interest in Retro design is an ongoing tribute to Decos endurance.
Art Deco Interiors chronicles the entire period from its early, opulent
stage (with Egyptian, African and other exotic influences) to the streamlined
Moderne style associated with such icons as the Chrysler Building and 1930s
movies. This book is an English import, but does a fine job covering Art Deco
in both America and Europe. You could enjoy it for the great illustrations alone:
many are from the period, others are outstanding color photos of recent restorations.
But dont be surprised if you end up captivated by Patricia Bayers thorough
and well-written history of the era that revolutionized 20th century interior
design.

This quality coffee table book illustrates the best of southwestern design.
Serenely gorgeous photos feature old and new architecture, as well as the
Georgia OKeefe, blue-sky-and-adobe environment that is the real bedrock
underlying this areas unique sense of style. Dyed in the wool Chippendale
fans beware: you could end up with an entirely different view of what makes a
classic. With historical references ranging from ancient Pueblo architecture
to Frank Lloyd Wrights Pottery House, Santa Fe Style provides a genuine feel
for southwestern character, as well as its sense of style. The authors, both Santa
Fe residents, add a healthy dose of humor and local color to their stunning examples
of architecture and interior design.
